A luxurious coastal retreat crafted as a one‑bedroom haven, combining modern elegance with natural charm. The Annex was designed to feel calm, refined, and deeply connected to its surroundings.

The Brief

After several detailed meetings with the client, we were provided with the architectural plans and commissioned to deliver the build. The vision was a compact yet premium coastal retreat where quality was the absolute priority. Every finish, material, and detail needed to reflect a high standard of craftsmanship.

Key Decisions

A number of design choices shaped the character and feel of the space, including:

·     Vaulted ceilings as a defining architectural feature
·     A handmade herringbone oak floor
·     Underfloor heating throughout
·     A large‑format tiled bathroom
·     Larch cladding to complement the coastal setting

These decisions ensured the retreat felt warm, contemporary, and beautifully detailed.

The Build

Constructed as a full timber‑frame building on traditional footings and slab, the project was completed to full Building Control specifications. The timber frame allowed for precision, efficiency, and a clean finish—ideal for a small but high‑quality structure.

The Outcome

The finished Annex is a serene, beautifully balanced retreat that feels far more spacious than its footprint suggests. The vaulted ceilings create an airy, open atmosphere, while the handcrafted herringbone floor adds warmth and sophistication. Natural light flows through the space, highlighting the clean lines and premium finishes. Externally, the larch cladding softens the building and helps it settle naturally into its coastal environment. The result is a refined, inviting hideaway that delivers comfort, style, and craftsmanship in equal measure.
